Overview
It is not clear how much Madeline knew about her son's life as a spy. What he seems to know is that he tends to be in a different city, in a different country, or generally in a different place, and that he can not reveal where he is. Madeline was excited when Michael returned to Miami and wished he would stay. He sometimes asks for his help with the problems of his friends.
Madeline's relationship with Michael has been chaotic, and complicated by the fact that her husband, and the father of her children, regularly abuse them. Madeline believes that Michael exacerbated her father, and that this was the reason for Michael's father's beating. He then allowed Michael to join the army at the age of 17 by forging his father's signature on his registration form. Madeline has been mad at Michael for years for various reasons, such as not attending her father's funeral. Upon arriving in Miami, he asks Michael to visit his grave in exchange for his father's Dodge Charger antique car.
Madeline follows the actions of his son Michael through his friend and ally Fiona Glenanne.
During the series, Madeline is often attracted to events in one way or another, which makes her more aware of what Michael and her friends actually do. In a pilot episode, Madeline is described as an unstable hypochondriac woman. This characterization is dumped in future episodes to be replaced by a more unadorned woman and supports her that she will remain for the rest of the series. This change is also marked by the haircut he received.
Although he is not yet "formally" informed of Michael's position as a spy, he has been actively helping on occasions, such as assisting with surveillance in 3rd season episodes of "Friends Like These", or even successfully interrogating a prisoner about Michael's whereabouts in " The Hunter ", while Fiona and Sam are still arguing about the best approach. He did not like the truth about Michael's life, and his fears were revealed when he was forced to defend him in FBI interrogation, at the end of the third season; The bureau questioned him about his activities that set him on fire, along with many other acts in his spy career. While he was able to deter Michael from returning, he was eventually arrested. However, when Michael disables Simon, the two disappear and Madeline is released, but he is annoyed at the loss of his son.
In season 4, after former counter-intelligence agent Jesse Porter joined the team, he moved to Madeline. He begins to form true friendships with Jesse and forms a mother-daughter like a bond with him. Knowing that his son had inadvertently burned Jesse, Madeline, like Fiona, expressed her displeasure over all the lies that Michael kept telling Jesse. At one point, he decided to go to Tampa to live with a friend he really did not like, for fear of letting the truth slip out and how he would react if he knew.
Madeline is often critical of Michael's methodology. But in Season 5, when Michael told him that Anson Fullerton caused a heart attack that killed her husband, she begged Michael to "do whatever was necessary" to bring Anson to court.
In season 6, Madeline serves as Fiona's source outside when she needs help in getting something to help her get out of jail. Madeline then becomes very discouraged and heartbroken after learning of the death of her youngest son, Nate Weston, from Michael. Since then, he has blamed Michael for his death, stating how Nate always idolized Michael and how Michael always insulted him. He felt Nate had no right to be out in the open with Michael and the others. Finally, after getting an answer to Nate's death from Card (who was really behind Nate's death), Madeline seems to finally be able to overcome her dispute with Michael, stating that she needs to forgive him if she regrets in the future if she loses herself, as she do with Nate.
In Season 7, Madeline gets custody of her grandson Charlie and begins taking care of her. He was targeted by the former Nate's airport, but forced Fiona to make the city look corrupt using her cashbook, to make her leave Madeline alone. James also paid his impromptu visit, causing Madeline to talk while holding him at gunpoint when James assured him that he just wanted to protect him and his grandson.
At the end of the series, Madeline is forced to burn her house to the ground and keep running with Fiona from the men of James. After Michael, Sam and Fiona enter James's communication/relay center with the intention of collecting evidence to use against him, James sends his men to where Madeline, Jesse, and Charlie are hiding. Knowing that they did not have a chance against James's army, and only armed with a C-4 charge (without a remote detonator), Madeline decided to sacrifice her life for the safety of Charlie and also Michael's. When Jesse and Charlie took refuge, Madeline manually blew up the C-4, killing him and James instantly as they entered. His last words were, "This one is for my children."
In the pilot series, the actress wears a wig, but throughout the rest of the series, her original hair is shown.
