Politics

Wells is a member of Nelson Provincial Council. From August 1855 to August 1857, he represented Suburban District. From October 1857 to November 1861, he represented North Suburban voters.

The nomination for the election of 1855 in Wairau electorate was set for November 19, and this is the date recorded in the standard reference book, New Zealand Parliamentary Record, 1840-1984, for the election of Wells, but the election did not take place. The letter did not reach the Wairau Valley in time, and the voters did not know about the election. The new date for the nomination meeting is set on December 6th. Wells was one of many members of the House of Representatives who resigned in early 1858; he placed a public notice for that effect in the March 20 edition of The Nelson Examiner . At the opening of the second session of the 2nd Parliament on April 10, 1858, the speaker read 14 resignations, including from Wells. The result of the intermission was won by Wells's predecessor, Frederick Weld. Wells later represented Nelson's Suburbs in the 3rd Parliament and the 4th Parliament, from 1861 to 1870, when he retired.
