The responsibilities of the Ministry of Transportation include the daily maintenance of roads, roads, bridges, and sidewalks in the city. The Department of Transportation is also responsible for installing and maintaining road signs, traffic signals, and street lights in the city. DOT supervises road coating, road hole repair, installation and maintenance of parking meters, and management of municipal parking facilities. DOT also operates the Staten Island Ferry. DOT is the exclusive provider of day-to-day operations and maintenance on New York-maintained streets and roads in the city, while major improvements and capital improvements in state-owned roads are conducted by DOT Country. Both DOT and NYSDOT reserve the right to install signs, signals, and other road features on state highways, which are then maintained daily by DOT. DOT sets speed limits on all roads and highways in the city, including those owned by NYSDOT.
DOT is also responsible for overseeing transportation-related issues, such as providing a van jitney service license and permits for road construction. DOT also advocates for transportation safety issues, including pedestrian and bicycle safety promotions.
The rules are listed in the 34th title of the New York City Rules .
