Biography
Education
Dolan went to school at St. Ignatius High School and earned an LL.B. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1956. He also received a Doctor of Law honors degree from Cleveland State University.
Professional career
After leaving Notre Dame, Dolan served in the United States Marine Corps for two years, where he reached the rank of first lieutenant. After leaving the Marine Corps in 1958, Dolan worked as an assistant attorney in Geauga County, Ohio before going to private practice. He eventually became president and managed the partners of Thrasher, Dinsmore, & amp; Dolan in Chardon, Ohio.
Owner of the Cleveland Indian
In 2000, Dolan (through family trust) bought Indian Cleveland from MLB for $ 323 million from Richard Jacobs, who, along with his late brother David Jacobs, had paid $ 35 million for the club in 1986. Jacobs had taken the Indian public on 1997. As part of the deal, Dolan buys all stocks for more than $ 12 per share, making the franchise personally held once again. During his time as an owner, the Indians have experienced a period of competitiveness, including the playoffs that ran in 2007, 2013, and made it into the World Series in 2016, as well as periods without success, including several seasons with over 90 losses.
While Indian player salaries are the highest in Major League Baseball during Jacobs' last years as an owner, sometimes they are among the lowest under Dolan. This led some fans to think of Dolan as a miser, though other fans denied the reputation. After the team reached the World Series 2016, the Indians obtained free agents Edwin Encarnación and Boone Logan.
In 2006, he started SportsTime Ohio to show Indian games. Dolan has six children; Among them was Matt who was the State Senator, and Paul worked for his law firm and has since been named President, and later became Chairman/CEO/owner of the Indian control. Dolan says her children will eventually take over the ownership of the Cleveland Indian as their successor. In 2012, STO is sold to Fox Entertainment Group.
His nephew James L. Dolan owns the New York Knicks of the NBA and New York Rangers of the NHL.
He has three brothers: Charles; Bill (retired and lived in Fort Myers, Florida) and David, who died in a gliders crash in 1980.
