Season summary

Season 3 took with Westen, after losing the protection of "Management," now under surveillance by Miami Detective Paxson (Moon Bloodgood), who has been tasked to monitor its activities. Michael was able to secure the arrest of a major Miami criminal, Paxson, has long targeted, and he threatened to reveal the true state of the arrest if Paxson did not stop following him. Paxson agreed with the deal. Michael was immediately contacted by a man named Tom Strickler (Ben Shenkman), a "spy, freelance spy broker who likes to be friends," who offered to dismantle Michael in return for his help with potentially lethal jobs. It was clear to Michael that Strickler had a great connection, if it was a shadow, but it seemed the first person he met was able to return his old job to him. At first seemingly successful, and Michael was able to confirm, through interaction with an undercover CIA agent, Diego Garza (Otto Sanchez), the movement was being made on his burning notice. At the end of the middle season, however, Michael is forced to kill Strickler to save Fiona's life. The action had unforeseen consequences, including the murder of Agent Garza.

After Strickler's death, Westen was contacted by a colleague named Mason Gilroy (Chris Vance), who was responsible for Garza's murder. Gilroy tells Michael that he wants Michael's help on a very lucrative operation. Believing Gilroy to plan something dangerous, Michael plays together to uncover the plot with the goal of finally thwarting it. After performing several tasks for Gilroy, Michael learned that the work involved the maximum security custody provided from Chile to Poland. Gilroy's job was to divert the plane to Miami, but he was betrayed and detonated. Before he died, he told Michael that the man behind the operation was Simon (Garret Dillahunt), a man who committed a crime used to burn Michael. In the final of Season 3, Michael asks Management for help to stop Simon. Michael manages to capture Simon but is captured by himself, while Management declares that Michael has "a great future." Michael is taken to a mysterious room, where he sits as the season ends.

Actor Michael Weston appeared in one episode as a schizophrenic MIT graduate who needed Michael to protect him from what he thought was an alien who sold the names of undercover spies. Also, Sharon Gless was nominated for an Emmy Primetime Award for Outstanding Actress in the Drama Series for her work this season. Gless is also reunited with her former Cagney & amp; Lacey co-star, Tyne Daly, for the episode "A Dark Road".
