Alabama Military Department is the executive department within the Alabama government. The military department is responsible for managing Alabama's military forces, including the Alabama Army National Guard, Alabama National Water Guard, and the Alabama State Defense Force.

The Alabama Army National Guard exists as a reserve army that adds to the US Army, and as a state militia who answers to the Governor of Alabama. The Alabama Army National Guard maintains 141 armory across the state.

Alabama Air National Guard
The Alabama Air National Guard exists either as a reserve force that augments the United States Air Force, and as a state militia who answers to the Governor of Alabama. The Alabama Air National Guard provides ready mission troops to the federal government and the Governor of Alabama, while providing assistance to citizens and civil authorities during natural or emergency disasters under the command of the Adjutant General.
Alabama State Defense Force
The Alabama State Defense Force is Alabama state defense force and is responsible for carrying out the duties of the National Alabama Guard every time the National Guard is in federal service. In 2018, the Alabama State Defense Force was temporarily inactive for reorganization.
