A restricted view is a term used in US civil procedure law to describe the appearance of a civilian defendant in quasi in a brake action in another state court to dispute a liability to a certain extent from the value of the property seized by the court. This strategy allowed the defendant to dispute only the amount of confiscated, although this amount is less than the total amount in the controversy, thus limiting his personal responsibility. Prior to the appearance of this procedural device, a defendant faced a good dilemma allowing his property to be seized without defense and sold on a sheriff's sale to fulfill some claim against him or, on the other hand, to appear in court to refute claims but in the process expose him to full private jurisdiction court and therefore the whole amount in controversy.
The limited appearance can be combined with a special appearance, allowing the defendant to first dispute the personal jurisdiction of the court over the defendant, and then only if necessary debate a limited amount in controversy.
