Anthony Edward Sowell grew up in East Cleveland, one of seven children born to Claudia's single mother "Gertude" Garrison. Seven other children belonging to Sowell's sister also lived in the household, after moving after the death of their chronically ill mother. According to Sowell's niece, Garrison was physically assaulted by his brothers while his own children watched from adjoining rooms. In one incident, Garrison forced him to naked in front of other children, then whipped him with an electric wire until he bled. Sowell himself began raping his niece almost every day for two years, beginning when he was eleven years old.

Military service

At the age of 18, Sowell entered the United States Marine Corps on January 24, 1978. He attended a recruitment training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in South Carolina, then further trained as an electrician at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. On July 13, 1978, he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, also in North Carolina. In 1980, Sowell spent a year abroad with the 3rd Class Service Support Group, then returned to Cherry Point. He was then ordered to Marine Corps Base Camp Butler in Okinawa, Japan on January 20, 1984. A year later he was transferred to Camp Pendleton in California for three days until he left on January 18, 1985. During his seven-year Marine Corps career, Cowral Sowell received a Medal of Good Behavior with one star service, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Certificate of Appreciation, Temple Pole, and two Letter of Appreciation.

1989 attack, containment and release

In 1989, a three-month pregnant woman went to Sowell's house voluntarily. When he tried to leave, he tied his hands and feet with his tie and belt, then clogged it with a rag. The victim told police: "He strangled me hard because my body started to feel tingling, I thought I was going to die." Sowell was charged with kidnapping, rape, and attempted rape. He eventually pleaded guilty to charges of attempted rape, and as a result he served a sentence of 15 years in prison. He was released in 2005.

Sowell worked in the factory until 2007 when he began collecting unemployment benefits. Neighbors say he made a living by selling scrap metal. They complain to the health department of the stench in the neighborhood. She is a member of an online dating service, where she states that she is a "master" who is looking for obedient people to "train".

Lori Frazier, nephew of Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson, started a relationship with Sowell shortly after he was released from prison and stayed at his home. He claims to have smelled a rotten body odor and he was told the smell came from Sowell's stepmother. When he moved, he claimed that the smell came from the Sausage Ray Shop, located next to Sowell's residence. There was confusion when Frazier stopped living at Sowell's house. In a video interview he mentioned the move in 2007, but in a published article he is said to have lived there until 2008. Another article quotes a Frazier friend stating that Frazier stopped spending time at Sowell's house in 2008.

The discovery of corpses and capture

In September 2009, Sowell invited a woman he knew to his house for a drink. On September 22, 2009, he reported to police that after a few drinks, he became angry, beat him, strangled him and raped him when he passed out. On October 29, police arrived at his home with a warrant to arrest him on suspicion of rape. He was not there, but they found two bodies on the floor in the living room. He was found and arrested two days later.

The bodies of four other women were found all over the house, buried in shallow graves in the crypt and in crawl space at home. After digging in the backyard, investigators found three more bodies and the rest of the fourth. Police also found human skulls in a bucket inside the house, which brought the number of bodies to eleven. Most of the victims were killed by manual strangulation and others were gagged or had ligatures on their bodies when they were found. Sowell also has at least three more rape victims he has actually let live. All three never reported attacks, because of their previous drug history or other personal reasons. Many victims were taken to his home with an invitation to smoke cocaine with him. He is a known drug user throughout his neighborhood.

At the time of his capture, Sowell was 50 years old. He has lived in that location for four years. He was arrested with $ 5 million bonds. His trial should have started on June 2, 2010 but was repeatedly postponed: first until September 7 to allow Sowell's lawyers more time to prepare, then until February 14, 2011, then until May 2 at the request of Sowell's defense lawyer who needed more time to comb the thousands of recordings and watch video surveillance clocks from the property next to Imperial Avenue Sowell's home, where the remaining 11 women were found in 2009, and then until June 6 at the request of the prosecutor for scheduling the conflict. The trial finally began on June 6, 2011.

Punishment

Sowell was charged with eleven counts of aggravated murder and more than 70 allegations of rape, kidnapping, damaging evidence, and bodily abuse. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity but later changed his plea for "innocence." On July 22, 2011, he was convicted of all but two counts against him, including the murder of eleven women whose bodies were found at his home in 2009. On August 10, the judges recommended the death penalty for Sowell. On August 12, Judge Dick Ambrose endorsed the jury's recommendation. Since September 14, 2011, Sowell has been serving a death sentence at the Chillicothe Penitentiary.

In November 2011, Sowell's lawyers, Jeffry F. Kelleher and Thomas Rein, filed Appeals Notice to the Ohio Supreme Court. Sowell's execution was set on October 29, 2012, but in March 2012, Motion for Stay of Execution was filed; the motion was given in April, pending the final decision of the appeal. In October 2012, Sowell's new lawyers, Jeffrey M. Gamso and Erika Cunliffe from the Cuyahoga Regional Public Defender's Office, pleaded for his conviction and death sentence to be rejected on 21 points, with three main ones being:

  • that Sowell did not receive a fair trial because of extensive media coverage. "The media's attention is overwhelming, generating thousands of news, and... local coverage 'is both frenzied and sustainable.'"
  • that the courtroom has been closed to the public "during the trial of proof and when a jury is selected"
  • and that he has received "bad legal representation." "Sowell court lawyers should have their clients plead guilty to murdering women and then focus their efforts to prevent Sowell from getting the death penalty."

In September 2014, the court asked the two sides to discuss three issues.

On April 5, 2016, the Ohio Supreme Court heard arguments from Sowell and Cuyahoga County D.A. representing the State of Ohio on the merits of a closed pre-trial Hearing Trial before the Sowell trial, and the right of the accused to a fair and open trial. The lawyer representing Sowell argues that Sowell's Sixth Amendment right is violated by closing Supres- sion Opinion to the press, and that the Court must turn its death sentence into life imprisonment as a remedy for structural error resulting in a violation. They also argue that lawyers have made a mistake, and "urged the Ohio Supreme Court to send the case back to Cuyahoga County for a retrial.'Frankly we failed," lawyer Jeffrey Gamso told the Ohio Supreme Court. "

The state is of the opinion that if Sowell's Sixth Amendment right is violated through a closed Superintendent Pre-trial, it will not affect the outcome of the proceedings, as the evidence is overwhelming, and that "Sowell's lawyers are the ones who ask several times in his book. the jury must be done privately, without cameras in the courtroom. "The state also insists that Sowell never denied his mistake, and that the vile nature of his crime - coupled with a bit of lightening evidence to refuse to impose the death penalty - a warrant that affirms the death penalty.

On December 8, 2016, the Ohio Supreme Court rejected an appeal from Anthony Sowell, confirming murder and execution. In May 2017, Sowell appealed his case to the US Supreme Court. In October 2017, the US Supreme Court said it would not review Sowell's appeal. In February 2018, Ohio Supreme Court rejected Sowell's request to reopen his call.

Victim

On November 5, 2009, two of eleven victims were identified. The first to be identified was Tonia Carmichael, a 53-year-old African American woman who had disappeared more than a year earlier. His body was found buried in his backyard. He seems to have been strangled and identified through the use of DNA evidence. His mother reported missing him in December 2008.

The second victim was identified as Telacia Fortson, a 31-year-old African American woman who disappeared five months earlier. Although she has been missing since June, her mother did not report her missing until she heard news coverage of the corpse found at Sowell's house.

On November 8, 2009, three more bodies were identified. Crystal Dozier is a 38-year-old African American woman who disappeared in May 2007. Dozier, mother of seven, lives in the area where her body was found. His family reported missing him to the Cleveland Police Department. This is not the first time he's lost, and the family has accused the police of failing to investigate. The family took it themselves to post the flyer and called the hospital.

Amelda "Amy" Hunter is a 47-year-old African American woman. Hunter, a beautician and mother of three, did not live in the area where her body was found, but she often visited. The previous injury made him unable to use one of his arms. His family did not report it missing until after the police started removing the corpse from Sowell's house.

Michelle Mason is a 45-year-old African American woman last seen in October 2008. She lives in the area where her body was found. According to records, police conducted a full investigation when his family reported missing him.

Records of missing people will return to Sowell in June 2005 release of the wanted prison and DNA tests carried out on bodies found at Sowell's home. The protesters holding the posters of lost loved ones gathered outside his home at the time.

East Cleveland police also reopened some cold cases from the late 1980s. The killing with the strangulation used a similar modus operandi and stopped around 1989, the same time that Sowell was captured. The FBI was gathering information to see if Sowell might be related to unsolved cases in the city where he had lived.
