The Historic Notification License and Disclaimer (HPND) is an open source license, approved by the Open Source Initiative (OSI) and verified as GPL-compatible by the Free Software Foundation. It's unique among the OSI licenses because of the possible options in its construction; it allows the licensor to choose anywhere from the 0-2 warranty rejection, whether they want to prohibit the author's name used in publicity or advertising around the distribution (as in BSD License), and other spelling and grammatical options. Additionally, the license can be almost functionally identical to the new 3-BSD License License (if option for non-promotional clause is implemented), or MIT License (if option for clause without promotion is not done).
This license variant is used primarily in older software, including the original BSD kernel. Currently, it is most popular to choose a new BSD 3-clause License or MIT License to meet the developer license requirements.
This is the only OSI certified license (excluding the public domain) that does not have a warranty disclaimer.
