Gilbert Baumslag (April 30, 1933 - October 20, 2014) is a respected Professor at City College of New York, with a joint pledge in mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering. He is director of the Center for Algorithms and Interactive Scientific Software, which grew out of the MAGNUS computational group theory project he was also headed for. Baumslag is also the organizer of New York Group Theoretical Seminars, perhaps the leading research seminar in group theory in the world.

Baumslag graduated from Witwatersrand University in South Africa with B.Sc. Honors (Masters) and D.Sc. He earned his Ph.D. from Manchester University in 1958; his thesis, written under the direction of Bernhard Neumann, entitled Some aspects of the group with unique roots . His contributions include the Baumslag-Solitar group and the paraffree group.

Baumslag was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1968-1969. In 2012 he became a partner of the American Mathematical Society.
