Legal details (expired)

The defendant in an act in the High Court of England enters his performance by a summons by sending either at the headquarters of the Supreme Court, or a district registry, a written memorandum either naming his lawyer or declaring him personally defending. He shall also give notice to the plaintiff his appearance, which should, according to the time constrained by a warrant, to be within eight days after the service; a defendant may, however, appear at any time before the judgment. The Supreme Court Regulation , ordering xii. and xiii., regulates procedures in relation to the entry of an appearance, the giving of notice, the time limit, the allowance and the general effect of the default appearance. In court there is no appearance other than coming to court from the parties in suits. In a criminal case, the defendant appears directly. In the civil case the baby appears by their guardian ad litem ; crazy people by their committee; company by a lawyer; a friendly society by a trustee or other officer appointed to sue or be prosecuted on their behalf.

In the United States, a party may make a special appearance against the jurisdiction of the court in which a claim has been filed, without thereby recognizing the jurisdiction of that court.
