Sinopsis
The season begins with Ryan, a former lawyer, attempting suicide due to an overdose of pills. Her sister, Christian, knows that giving a pill to an unethical family member, decides to give her a sugar pill without her knowledge. At first, he does not know and thinks that Wilfred is just a hallucination, then after a visit from his sister, he knows about sugar pills, therefore it is not known exactly why only Ryan sees Wilfred like that. Throughout the first season Wilfred put Ryan in a difficult situation including tricking Ryan into the neighbor's house while Wilfred stole the man's marijuana plant and defecated in his boots. Ryan confesses everything to his neighbor and is attacked. Wilfred uses Ryan's growing addiction to Jenna to convince Ryan to sabotage Jenna's relationship with Drew's long-distance boyfriend.
Ryan rescues Wilfred after he learns that the doggy day care manager, whom he started to abandon, is persecuting Wilfred, and Wilfred keeps a teddy doll. Wilfred starts having sex with this stuffed animal, with whom he communicates the same way Ryan communicates with Wilfred. Wilfred also pressed Ryan to pursue a sexual relationship with a single mother who suffered severe injuries, mainly because Wilfred was infatuated with his son's puppet giraffe. Wilfred also helps Ryan understand that he is not responsible for the death of his childhood dog, Sneakers. The audience knows that Ryan's mother can see her cat, Mittens, in the same way as Ryan sees Wilfred. Ryan discovers a man, Bruce, who claims to be able to see Wilfred in the same way as Ryan sees Wilfred, and tries to convince Ryan not to trust Wilfred. After the struggle, Ryan finds out that Bruce and Wilfred are playing games to test Ryan's confidence with Wilfred.
At the end of the season, Jenna accidentally digested the marijuana-treated candy before her first as an anchorperson and was fired from her job, after which Ryan decided to represent her in a legal battle to get her job back. Although Ryan used to dig the dirt on his opponents to win, he decided not to this time. However, Wilfred did the opposite and Ryan used this evidence to restore Jenna's work.
Ryan uses his new "power" to break up Drew and Jenna, and dating Jenna. When he finds out that he needs to undergo a drug test he blackmail his sister (with knowledge of previous infidelity) to give her urine so Jenna will pass the test. This caused a wedge between Ryan and Christian and he left for India. However, the Christian is pregnant, which appears in Jenna's urine test. Jenna is now convinced she's pregnant so she's back with Drew. Wilfred had a car accident and lost amnesia and did not remember Ryan. The season ends with Ryan running back to his home remembering Wilfred's will written before the accident so Ryan will know what to do if something happens to him. Ryan tries to open the door to his basement only to find it's actually a closet. A tennis ball (linking back to the first episode of the season) rolled out of the closet, leaving Ryan bewildered.

Wilfred is based on critically acclaimed Australian series of the same name and adapted for FX by David Zuckerman's veteran David Vuckerman. Wilfred is produced by FX Productions while executive producers include: Zuckerman; Rich and Paul Frank; Jeff Kwatinetz; and Joe and Ken Connor from the original Australian series. Wilfred co-creator Jason Gann and Randall Einhorn serve as co-executive producers. Einhorn directed 10 episodes of the first season and Victor Nelli, Jr. directed three. The premiere episode was filmed in the summer of 2010, written by Zuckerman, and directed by Einhorn. The show was recorded primarily with the cheap Canon EOS 7D DSLR cameras. The first episode of the show is included in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Complete 6 DVD.
