Notice to seafarers (NTM) advises seafarers of important matters affecting navigation safety, including new hydrographic information, channel changes and navigation assistance, and other important data.
More than 60 countries producing marine charts also produce notices to seafarers. About one-third of these are weekly, the other third is two monthly or monthly, and the rest are issued irregularly as needed. For example, the Royal Hydrographic Office of the United Kingdom publishes weekly updates.

United States
The US <.> Notice for Seafarers is provided weekly by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), set up in conjunction with the National Ocean Service (NOS) and the U.S. Coast Guard. Information in Notice for Mariners is formatted to simplify paper chart corrections, Light List , List of Light , United States Beach Pilot , and other publications produced by the NGA, NOS, and US Coast Guard.
Information for Notice for Mariners contributed by: National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (Department of Defense) for waters outside the territorial boundaries of the United States; The National Oceanic Service (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Ministry of Commerce), which is responsible for surveying and mapping the coast and ports of the United States and its territories; The US Coast Guard (Department of Homeland Security) responsible for the safety of marine life and the establishment and operation of navigational aids; and the Army Corps of Engineers (Department of Defense), which is responsible for the improvement of rivers and ports in the United States. In addition, important contributions are made by foreign hydrographic offices and observers who work together from all countries.
This notice consists of a Hydrogram page containing important items in Notice, a graphical correction section composed by an upgraded chart number, a correction section of a product catalog, a publication correction section, a broadcast warning alert summary, and additional pages of miscellaneous information.. It is the user's responsibility to decide which of the graphs and their publications require correction. Mariners are required to cooperate in chart correction and publication by reporting all discrepancies between the published information and the conditions actually observed and by recommending appropriate improvements. The reporting form is provided on the back of each Notice to Seafarers .
Edition No. 1 each year contains important information on subjects that complement information that is not usually found on graphics and navigation publications. This information is published as a Special Notice to Mariners Paragraphs. Additional items considered to be of interest to seafarers are also included in this Notice.
Most of the data in the US Notifications for Seafarers is obtained from foreign notifications.
Maps Notice to mariners
Canada
In Canada, the Coast Guard Canada (CCG) Notice for Mariners publication informs seafarers about important navigational safety issues affecting Canadian waters. This electronic publication is published monthly and can be downloaded from Notices to Mariners (NOTMAR) website. The information in Notice to Mariners is formatted to simplify paper paper corrections and navigation publications.
Site NOTMAR.gc.ca is a free 24/7 service that provides seafarers with the latest security advisors. It provides seafarers with a fast and easy-to-use interface to access Notices to Mariners information. The system also generates weekly and monthly notifications, for registered users. This online mail service provides Monthly Notice publication to Mariners as well as weekly notifications (part II - chart correction) which notifies the seafarers notices that have been issued against their chart selection. This mailing service simplifies the process for registered clients to update their publications and graphs as required in the Canadian Shipping Act.
NOTMAR's website also includes historical Chart correction and Correction of Historical Routes directions; also, it provides access to downloadable Chart Patch, contains links to CHS's Chart Number 1, instructions for applying Notices to mariners to update their paper charts manually, and other useful information.
Summary of Corrections
A close friend to Notice for Mariners is Summary of Corrections . The Summary is published in five volumes. Each volume covers most of the earth including several chart regions and many sub-regions. Volume 5 also includes special graphics and publications corrected by Notice to Seafarers . Since Summaries contain cumulative corrections, any chart, regardless of print date, can be corrected with the proper Summary volume and all subsequent Notices to Mariners .
