Denzel Washington is an American actor who made his film debut at Carbon Copy (1981). In 1982, Washington made his first appearance in medical drama. Elsewhere as Dr. Philip Chandler. That role proved to be a breakthrough in his career. He starred as Private First Class Melvin Peterson in drama A Soldier's Story (1984). The film is an adaptation of the off-Broadway drama A Soldier's Play (1981-1983) in which Washington has previously played the same character. In 1987, he played Steve Biko, an anti-apartheid activist in the drama directed by Richard Attenborough Cry Freedom , where he received his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Two years later, Washington won an award for playing Trip, a former slave-turned-soldier in the movie Civil War Glory (1989). In 1990, he played the title character in The Tragedy of Richard III drama, and starred in the comedy drama Spike Lee Mo 'Better Blues . Washington received the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival, to play the eponymous civil rights activist at Lee's Malcolm X (1992).

In 1993, Washington starred in the adaptation of Kenneth Branagh from Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing, The Pelican Brief's film thriller in front of Julia Roberts, and the AIDS drama Philadelphia opposite Tom Hanks. He appeared in Tony Scott's Crimson Tide <1995>. Washington won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - The Movie Movement Drama, and the Silver Bear both for Best Actor for playing a punished boxer, Rubin Carter in a movie biography The Hurricane (1999). He followed this with other biographical roles as American football coach Herman Boone in the 2000 sports drama Remember the Titans . For the next role as Alonzo Harris's corrupt police in the 2001 Day Crime Thriller (2001), Washington received the Academy Award for Best Actor. Based on his victory, he became the first African American actor to win two competitive Academy Awards, and the first since Sidney Poitier in 1964 to win major actor awards.

Washington was named Scott with the movie thriller Man in Fire, and starred Meryl Streep in The Manchurian Candidate (both in 2004). In 2005, he returned to the stage in the drama Shakespeare Julius Caesar . Washington plays the drug lord Frank Lucas on American Gangster, and poet and educator Melvin B. Tolson in The Great Debaters (both in 2007). In 2010, Washington received a Tony Award for Best Actor in Play to play Troy Maxson on Fence. For his role as an airline pilot for alcohol at Flight, he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In 2014, Washington appears in the action of The Equalizer thriller, and drama A Raisin in the Sun.
