History
In 2007, the region gave an 80% referendum to the formation of the municipality. If passed, it would make Fulton County the only area in Georgia composed entirely of the municipality. The law authorizing the referendum was sponsored by Kasim Reed, who later became a member of the Georgia State Senate, and now the former mayor of Atlanta. Although this area has many low-density suburbs, it will be called "city", the only type of municipality currently permitted under Georgian law.
The referendum was followed indirectly from the successful merger of Sandy Springs in 2005, on the opposite side of Atlanta, with several other communities in Fulton voting to merge in 2007.
Georgia General Assembly 2016 passed the bill HB514 to merge South Fulton, which received the signature of the Governor Nathan Deal on April 29, 2016. On November 8, 59% of South Fulton citizens choose to become a rental city. In early 2017, South Fulton held an election on 21 March, followed by runoff elections before the merger came into effect on 1 May.
In November 2017, after a one-year waiting period mandated by state law, city council voted renaissance as the new name for the city, has also considered Campbellton (city within the city), Atlanta Heights, Wolf Creek and maintains South Fulton among a total of 20 names out of 250 suggested by the public. After a three-week public notice period and two regular public meetings, required to amend the city's charter, the city council approved a name change in December 2017. However, Mayor Edwards vetoed a name change on December 18, citing several reasons including the contract and some public opposition.
