Political career
After losing a plebiscite party to Ithaca's seat, Funnell was elected to the Australian Labor Party candidate for Brisbane's seat in the 1932 state election, beating long-time member Mick Kirwan.
Funnell retained the seat for the Labor Party because it won back the government after three years in contention. He held a chair until his death in 1936, and during his tenure he has been a member of the Public Works Committee.

While on holiday in Burleigh Heads in January 1936, Funnell returned to Brisbane to undergo surgery for appendicitis at Mater Misericordiae Hospital. He collapsed in the theater, and died before the operation could begin. His funeral was held at St. Stephen's Cathedral and continued to Toowong Cemetery.
