The post was born to a Russian immigrant in Philadelphia, next to Lyric Theater, one of seven homes owned by his father, Leo. Poses grew up watching movies in his family theater, starting with cleaning jobs and eventually working to deliver, and then working in the projection room while in high school. He excels at Philadelphia Senior High School, both academically and athletically, gaining local fame as a footballer. As a young man, Posel prefers the novel for the movie, because he feels the film does not have a novel "resonance". Recreational activities of choice include a jazz club. In 1976, he opened the popular Ritz Three theater in the area.
