A search or look-out is the person on board who is responsible for the observation of the sea for danger, other ships, land, etc. Beware of reporting whatever they see and or hear. When reporting contacts, scouts provide information such as, holding objects, where the object is, the target angle, and the angle of the position and what the contact is. Observations should be really familiar with the various types of distress signals they might encounter at sea.

Naval Applications

Observations have traditionally been placed on tall columns, in nests and crows.

International Regulation to Prevent Sea Collision (1972) says in part:

Every the vessel must at any time keep the right view with sight (day or light form by eye or visual aids), hear (voice signal) or Marine VHF radios) and all available means (eg Radar, ARPA, AIS, GMDSS...) to assess whether there is a risk of collision.

Criminal Definition

By analogy, the term "spy" is also used to describe a person who accompanies criminals during a crime, and warns them of impending dangers: that is, police or eyewitnesses. Although scouts usually do not really participate in crime, they can still be accused of helping and abetting or by conspiracy, or as accomplices.
