John Harrington Farley (February 5, 1846 - February 9, 1922), also known as "Honest John" Farley , is an American politician from the Democratic Party who serves as 27 and 34 mayors Cleveland, Ohio, from 1883 to 1884 and from 1899 to 1900.

Early life and career
John Farley was born on February 5, 1846, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Patrick and Ann (nÃÆ'à © e Schwartz) Farley. His father was born in Ireland, and emigrated to the United States, settled in Cleveland in 1833. He won a city commission for all letters and express delivery arriving in Cleveland, which made him a rich man. His mother was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria, and emigrated to the United States with his farmer father, John. Farley's family is a big family.
Farley was educated at a Cleveland public school. He left school before the age of 16 to take over the wholesale and liquor business owned by his deceased brother Andrew who had died. After closing his efforts, he partnered with James Farnan to find a brass casting. Farley then took a business school course, and temporarily worked as an accountant and bookkeeper. After the death of his father in June 1883, Farley became a rich man.
Farley began his political career in 1871 when he was elected to the Cleveland City Council as a Democrat and served three terms - one of them as president of the council. After two unsuccessful attempts, Farley was elected mayor of Cleveland in 1883. After a term of office, he was appointed as an internal revenue collector by President Grover Cleveland. He served for four years. Farley became director of public works by Cleveland Mayor Robert Blee in the spring of 1893.
Farley nominated the mayor again in 1899, defeating the ruling Republican, Robert E. McKisson. In his tenure as mayor, Farley had to ask the state militia to support the Cleveland police in maintaining order during the tram strike in 1899. Farley retired from the mayor's office in 1901. His replacement was the progressive Democrat, Tom L. Johnson, regarded by many. as Cleveland's largest mayor.
After becoming mayor, Farley made a career in business and took part in the establishment of the National Bank. He was elected president of the Mutual & amp; Investment Co., and director of Guardian Savings and Trust Co.

Personal life and death
Farley married Margaret Kenney from Cleveland on November 23, 1884. He died of pneumonia on February 17, 1901, after a long battle with influenza.
Farley suffered a stroke at General Field in downtown Cleveland while driving a tram on the night of 9 February 1922. He died in an ambulance on his way to Huron Road Hospital. She is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland.
