John Ashley Griswold (18 November 1822 - 22 February 1902) was a lawyer, judge and politician from Catskill, New York. He was best known for his service as US Representative from 1869 to 1871.

Kehidupan awal

Griswold was born in Cairo, New York on 18 November 1822, son of Stephen H. and Phoebe (Ashley) Griswold. Griswold attends public schools, and colleges in Prattsville and Catskill, New York. She taught school and then studied law with her uncle, Addison C. Griswold, and Richard Corning, Erastus Corning's brother. Griswold was accepted in the bar in 1848, after which he began training in Greene County.

Careers

A Democrat in politics, Griswold served as a district attorney for Greene County from 1856 to 1859, and as a county judge from 1863 to 1867.

Griswold was elected as the First Forty Congress (March 4, 1869 - March 3, 1871). He refused to be a candidate for re-nomination in 1870 and continued legal practice. Griswold was elected the Catskill City Superintendent in 1871, and underwent a term of office. He served as a member of the State constitutional convention in 1894.

Death and burial

He died in Catskill on February 22, 1902. He was buried in the Catskill Village Cemetery.

Family

In 1857, Griswold married Elizabeth M. Roberts of Clintondale, New York. He died in 1896.
