Plot
Davis is a successful investment banker in a company founded and run by his father-in-law, Phil. His wife, Julia, was driving them when they were hit by another vehicle, killing Julia. Recovering at the hospital, he tried to buy candy from a non-functioning vending machine. Davis compiled a complaint to the vending machine maker that included some ventilation of his personal experience. This leads to a series of anonymous conversations with customer service representatives, Karen Moreno, where they end up sharing the details of each other's lives. Karen seemed to be the only person she spoke to, despite telling her story in an unpretentious and unemotional style. He brings this same unemotional process to work, which he has restored much earlier than expected. Davis did tell one other person, a fellow commuter rider that he realized he did not love Julia because he did not feel "... sad, or sick, or hurt...".
Changes in Davis's emotional state caused him to behave erratically. He noticed that he was followed by a green train station. The only thing that seems to be related to Davis is trying to understand what's inside, using a small device to disassemble his household appliances, his computer, the bathroom - finally tells Phil that he has the desire to dismantle the 120-year-old grandfather at the office Phil.
Karen follows Davis, talks to her on a commuter train without revealing her identity. He mistakenly left out some identification, and Davis simply moved to track him down at home, where he lives with his girlfriend and boss, Carl, and 15-year-old troublemaker Chris. When Carl was away on a long business trip, Davis slept in his home, where they developed deep profound friendships. Chris initially disliked Davis, but later grew not only to love it but to help Davis overcome, while Davis became his mentor in return.
Davis joins his in-laws in funding the foundation in the name of Julia who will provide an annual scholarship; during the interview Davis was disrespectful to one of the candidates for the award, and Phil asked him to sign a transfer of rights to his beneficiary in Julia's life insurance policy of $ 2.6 million, to a scholarship fund in his name. Davis buys a crusher from a hardware store (and, later, bulldozers) and, with Chris's help, destroys his home. When Davis discovered Julia's ultrasound from the previous year, she was devastated because she failed to tell him.
Night climax affects everyone. Davis took Karen to a party for the scholarship winner, very annoying to Julia's parents. A young man made an improper progress on Karen, and she then laughed out loud when she was introduced as a scholarship winner. Davis announced to everyone that Julia was pregnant and kept it a secret. Julia's mother told him that his wife was seeing someone else, and that the child was not her child and she took her for an abortion. Back at Karen's house, Davis discovered that Carl had returned and was reading the letters Davis had written to Karen. Carl defeated Davis, which means when compared to homophobic flocks that were beaten by Chris after coming out as gay.
Davis visited his wife's grave and the green station train arrived and a man carried flowers out of the car. He is Michael, the driver of the car who killed Julia. Davis forgave Michael and he experienced flashbacks from his wife and he together and he finally cried, bringing the closure. He realizes he loves his wife.
Davis has changed direction. He reconciled with Julia's parents, asking Phil to contribute to fixing the carousel - destined to be destroyed - as a warning to Julia.
Davis received a letter from Chris saying that he had recovered from the beating, his mother had left Carl, and Davis had to be at Pier 54 at a certain time, which resulted in Davis witnessing the demolition of some of the waterfront buildings across the Hudson River. Chris watched Davis through the binoculars from the nearest point of view.
