The letter request , or request letter (payment), is a letter stating a legal claim (usually drafted by a lawyer) that makes a request for restitution or performance of some liability, due to an alleged breach of contract the recipient, or due to a legal error. Although letter requests are not legally required, they are often used, especially in contract law, lawsuits, and commercial law cases. For example, if someone anticipates a violation, it is advantageous to send a request letter confirming that the other party appears to be in violation and request performance guarantees. An unresponsive request letter may be a silent acceptance. Also, a request letter will often produce a rejection letter stating the basis for rejecting your party's claim (such as when the wrong entity is sued), and sometimes a good indication of what defenses will be raised if the charges are filed later.
The request letter is sometimes used as a form of harassment and/or intimidation.

In a personal injury claim, the settlement negotiation process is initiated by the victim who submits a request letter to the insurance company. The purpose of a letter of request is to present the fact about an accident to persuade the insurance company to provide adequate compensation. A typical request letter is prepared in the following ways:

- Description of Personal Injuries
- Description of medical care
- List of Billing/Loss Statement of Medical Income
- Injury Settlement Request
Personal injury request letters are then sent to the insurance company with additional documents referenced in the letter. This may include a copy of an accident report, photos of accidents/injuries, medical bills, doctor statements, etc.
The insurance company will then analyze the arguments made in the request letter and respond with a counter settlement offer.

In the United States, demand for letters from debt collectors relating to consumer debt must comply with the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act.
In some types of legal proceedings in Quebec, a request letter is mandatory; without it, someone could lose the case.
