Robert Osbourne Denver (January 9, 1935 - September 2, 2005) is an American comedy actor. He is known for portraying Gilligan on the Gilligan's Island television series and beatnik Maynard G. Krebs in the 1959-1963 sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis .

Television career
Denver debuted in 1957, playing a small part in one episode of The Silent Service (S01 E37: "Losing Tang"). While teaching at Corpus Christi in 1958, Denver was allowed to audition for the role of The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis sitcom as an aid to his sister, who was a secretary at the production site. She got the role, and left teaching the following year to become a regular in the series. From 1959 to 1963, he appeared in the series as Maynard G. Krebs, Dobie Gillis' best beatnik friend, played by Dwayne Hickman. After filming the first three episodes, Denver received a draft notice, and was briefly written from the script and replaced, but he was designated 4-F because of a long neck injury, and returned to Dobie Gillis just missing an episode. Denver then took on the role of Maynard G. Krebs in a television sequel What Happened to Dobie Gillis? (1977) and Bring Me the Head of Dobie Gillis (1988).
During his time at Dobie Gillis , Denver appears in the NBC interview program, Here's Hollywood . In 1963, Denver played the only major dramatic role on television, as a doctor (Dr. Paul Garrett) in an episode of Dr. Kildare , broadcast on October 10, 1963; episode, "If You Can not Believe the Truth...", also featuring Barbara Eden and Ken Berry. Between late Dillie Gillis and early Gilligan's Island Denver appeared in The Farmer's Daughter episode and in the last episode The Danny Thomas Show . After the cancellation of Dobie Gillis, Denver got the lead role in the sitcom Gilligan's Island, which took place for three seasons (1964-67) on CBS, and became the subject of the later syndication. The first feature film feature of Denver is in a service joke, A Private's Affair (1959), with Sal Mineo. Credited as "Robert Denver", he has a small role in the film Jimmy Stewart, Take Her, She's Mine (1963), plays a beatnik poet who works in a coffee shop. Denver also appeared in the Beach Movie For The Young Thinkers (1964) with Tina Louise before the development of Gilligan's Island.
Other films where Denver appeared include Who's Minding the Mint? (1967), The Sweet Ride (1968) and Are You Hearing The One About the Sales Sales? (1968) with Phyllis Diller. In 1983, he appeared in a television movie US High School. .
Other Jobs
In 1970, Denver replaced Woody Allen in the original Broadway production of Allen's hit comedy Play It Again, Sam , earning praise from Clive Barnes's Clive Barnes critics for delivering "an original clown-like panic "that Barnes thinks is lacking in Allen's own performance in the lead role.
Later in his life, Denver returned to his home adopted Princeton, West Virginia, and became the personality of FM radio. He and his wife, Dreama, manage a small "oldies format" radio station, WGAG-LP 93.1 FM. He also earns a small income that makes a public appearance, often costumed as Gilligan. In 1992, he played Gilligan to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation for fundraising for organizations in West Virginia.
Legal issues
Denver was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in his car in February 1971. He claimed there was no contest for a $ 250 fine penalty reduction.
Denver was arrested for carrying a box of marijuanas sent to his home in 1998. He originally said the box came from Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island, but later refused to name him in court and testified that " some crazy fans will send him. " Police reportedly found more plants and related equipment at Denver's home. He claimed there was no contest and received a six-month trial period.
Death
Denver died September 2, 2005 from pneumonia at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He has received cancer treatment and has undergone heart bypass surgery earlier in the year.
