Background and ignition

Record heat settings in the area, and Red Flag Warnings from the National Weather Service set the stage for explosive fire situations. In the afternoon hours of Tuesday, June 11, 2013, begins before 2:00 pm. MDT, fire reports in the Black Forest area reached 9-1-1 dispatchers. An early 9-1-1 call came from Gregg Cawlfield, reporting small structural fires. The recorded video phone shows that the fire started as a small localized event. The record heat and strong winds quickly spread the fire to several hundred acres. Starting June 20, investigations into the causes and timetables of events continue.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo, Colorado issued a notice for severe fires from 2:00 pm. on June 12, with low humidity, strong winds, and temperatures approaching 90 ° F (32 ° C) which is expected to propel the flame. At 4:50 pm, the evacuation area stands at 55 square miles, with firefighters from agencies throughout the state of Colorado being mobilized, as well as helicopters and military planes.

In the evening hours of June 12, the fire exploded in a measure fueled by dry winds, rising lines of fire, and spread east, north and west. The evacuation area expanded from El Paso County to Douglas and Elbert Counties, and west to Interstate 25. Several evacuation shelters were forced to be evacuated due to smoke.

Firefighters were frustrated by the intrusion of road closures on Highway 83, Walker Road, and Evans Road, according to the scanner traffic observed by The Gazette. Also observed by reporters on the scanners is an example of a news media helicopter breaking enclosed airspace over a fire, creating dangerous situations and potential air disaster events.

Thick smoke was driven by the south/east-eastern wind covering most of Douglas County's inhabitants and driven to other Denver suburbs.

Fire researchers confirm that lightning has been ruled out as a cause of fire. The investigation centers are north of Shoup Road near Darr Drive, an area with many houses in heavily forested areas.

Destruction

In two days of ignition, the fire of the Black Forest surpassed the Waldo Canyon fire the previous year as the most destructive fire in Colorado history. El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa stated that at least 360 homes have been lost and 15,000 acres have been burned since the June 13 morning briefing. It was also released that 1,205 homes were still unaffected by the fire, and 38,000 residents have been evacuated from 13,000 homes so far. The National Weather Service forecast the third day of hot, dry, windy weather for the fire area, especially in the afternoon. Thunderstorms are expected to occur.

It has been the most destructive fire in Colorado history, the fire remains at zero containment throughout the day with weather forecasts not showing any visible natural help.

Earlier Thursday, the fire also broke the transmission line for 740 AM KVOR, which operates the transmitter in the evacuation zone. As a result, the crew can not enter the area to repair the transmission line. The Gazette reported that KVOR moved to 1300 AM, a twin station.

At 5:00 am, fire retention increased to five percent, and the acreage increased to 15,700 acres (24.5 sq mi; 64 km 2 ). Sheriff Terry Maketa reported two fatalities were found, and the victims appeared to have died while trying to evacuate their home. Lightning bolts and lightning storms are also reportedly formed in the area, including one that triggered a brief sister flame north of Cripple Creek.

Maketa announced on Friday morning that 19 more houses were on fire, totaling 379 and at night, his office further renewed the number to 419.

Containment

Firefighters can make some important gains on Friday night, June 14, when some cloud and rain cover moves into the area, bringing a 30 percent detention that night.

It was announced at noon on Saturday, June 15, that the sheriff's office had updated some information at midnight, including the number of burned houses rising to 473 and fire arrests up to 30 percent. At night, the KOAA reported a fire of 55 percent and the number of houses destroyed as 483.

On Sunday, June 16, the Denver Post reported that the fire was 65 percent contained and the number of destroyed homes has climbed to 485. The burned area was lowered from 15,000 to 14,198 hectares due to better mapping. The cost of firefighting has reached $ 5.2 million.

At 7:30 pm on June 16, the Sheriff's office released new data on the number of affected houses: 3,633 unaffected, 483 total losses, and 17 with partial damage. Due to a lesson from Waldo Canyon Fire, a list of publically accessible affected homes is published by the Sheriff's office and updated regularly, using the same web address to reflect ongoing updates to this data in real time. At 8 pm, more of the evacuated area must be converted into pre-evacuation status to allow residents in the area to return home.

At 10:00 pm Thursday, June 20, the Sheriff's office allows residents to return to most areas of the fire, although small areas including the Darr Circle, Falcon Drive, Peregrine Way and adjacent parts of Shoup Road continue to be closed for residents and communities due to investigations The ongoing crime scene.

Aftermath

On Friday, June 21, the fires were completely under control, but the total number of lost homes had risen to 509, and Sheriff Maketa stated that the assessed value of lost homes amounted to about $ 90 million. The number was revised upwards the next day until 511 homes were lost. As of June 20, 2013, the cost for the battle is estimated at $ 9,323,955.

At the time of the first completion of the four parts of the Black Forest assessment in early July, the El Paso County Accessor office reported that the fire destroyed 486 homes - fewer than the initial estimate of the 511 sheriff department - and damaged 37, causing $ 85,444,052 in damages. Sixteen members of the office, which has been working full-time on fire, now have to put the dollar amount for the loss of outbuildings, commercial structures and, perhaps the most expensive, trees. Many without trees are sold about 30 percent less than one with native trees, and buyers will pay about 15 percent less to much with a damaged tree. The appraisal office comes with the total amount after on-site inspection of 2,400 bundles. "We may have to review the Black Forest in a year or two because we have no guarantee that damaged trees will make it," said village appraiser Mark Lowderman.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, which killed a husband and wife, Marc Allen Herklotz, 52, and his wife, Robin Lauran Herklotz, 50, who tried to flee the area. The bodies were recovered Thursday 13 June in a garage of houses whose flames have been flattened. They were next to the car with the door open. The car's luggage is full of stuff. The sheriff's office, who said the cause of the fire was unnatural, had executed a search warrant and conducted an interview.
